Guest Lecture Prof. Tony Worsley

Guest Lecture dr_ Agustine LageFaculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia through the Department of Community Medicine FKUI in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Center for Food and Nutrition (SEAMEO RECFON) and Continuning Medical Education- Continuing Professional Development (CME-CPD) FKUI held a guest lecture on Wednesday (30/9) at Azrul Anwar room, Department of Community Medicine FKUI, Jakarta. The guest speaker was from the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Deakin University, Australia, Prof. Tony Worsley, who talked about the experience regarding health promotion programs, specifically about the promotion of nutrition and lifestyle on the citizens of Australia. The theme was “Nutrition and Physical Activity – lessons from Australia “.

The lecture was opened with the speech of the Chairman of the Department of Community Medicine, FKUI, Dr. dr. Herqutanto, MPH, MARS. Furthermore, Dr. dr. Aria Kekalih, MTI, as the moderator, introduced and invited Prof. Worsley to deliver his presentation.

In the last 30 years, Australia has successfully developed a variety of health promotion programs for its citizens. This includes a decrease in smoking rates and consumption of food that have high-saturated fat content. The success of this program can be seen from the reduction in mortality from cardiovascular disease in Australia.

In his presentation, Prof. Tony Worsley conveyed that a healthy and active lifestyle can be achieved by the increasing behavior of people who can choose a healthy consumption. People, either with the good or bad health condition, can start to familiarize choosing the best food in order to maintain the condition of their health. Another aspect to consider is the physical activity in everyday life. Society needs to be motivated and geared towards the activities of daily living were non-sedentary, which can maintain cardiac function, respiratory function and muscle function in order to stay healthy.

As one of the leading medical schools in Indonesia, FKUI certainly plays the role and responsibilities of the many efforts to promote the development of knowledge in health. The development of new knowledge and science is important to be shared by educators, researchers, students of FKUI, and the society in general. Through the exchange of ideas by experts and participants, new knowledge on how to improve human welfare and the importance of nutrition and physical activity in daily life will be comprehensively understood by the society. (Public Relations – Mel/Die)
