In the final year before becoming a medical doctor, every students are encouraged to make an initial and important step for further career development by choosing their own subject to be involved and learned during 4 weeks attachment in a program called Elective Module.

Yes, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia proudly implements Elective Module, which in the past is thought to be a fringe program but now has been established and widely conducted in many medical school due to its value to both students and faculty.

Elective Module is part of our curriculum which greatly contributes to “student centered” spirit in SPICES method that has proven to have great impact on advancement of student’s personal development. Elective Module is conducted in final year after most of the knowledge and skills in medicine and surgery have been delivered. Faculty’s departments and affiliated teaching hospitals will be the main placement for this program.

This academic experience will be the best chance to apply what students’ have learned during previous 9 semesters, since the main objective of Elective Module is to give more indepth experience in particular subject which has greatest interest.

We realize, the curriculum in such a way has given students the knowledge and skills; but its structure and schedule may not be enough to make them see the whole aspects of how doctors run their professional life. Their roles and duties, work environment and interactions with colleagues or non medical staffs may be different with what students have imagined. This adventure not only will enrich knowledge on completion of education as general practitioner but also can build up motivation to enter postgraduate study and be one of experts who will develop this area. Of course, relationship with supervisor should be an additional benefit to students’ future career.

So, especially for all students who will attach to Elective Module : enjoy your time and do the best during your attachment. Show your best performance as it will benefit you in the future
