FMUI’s Physician Created Intensive Family Planning Counseling Module on Ling Term Family Planning Method

Family planning is a government program in order to decrease maternal mortality rate. A stated on the Pearl Index, family planning method recommended is long term family planning because it has very high effectivity and 1 to 100.000 failure rate within one-year usage.

Woman’s knowledge about family planning is usually obtained from books, lectures, and counseling. However, women’s view on family planning is also affected by family’s and society’s view. There are many untrue rumors about family planning, these rumors need to be clarified by health workers in counseling sessions.

Recent studies stated that good counseling session can increase family planning success, and make acceptor use family planning method for a long time.

Curriculums and family planning trainings available these days only give 4% of the total time to teach about counselling. The other 96% is teaching about tool insertion and removal, therefore health workers competency on counseling needs to be improved.

Dr. Arietta R.D Pusponegoro, SpOG(K), Obstetrics and Gynecology staff of FMUI-RSCM did a research that produce counseling training module to improve health workers ability to do counseling and increased the number of long term family planning acceptor.

The research was done in three parts. The first part is module trials. The module is called “Intensive Long Term Family Planning Counseling Training”. It is formulated with group discussion and in depth interview to health workers and prospective acceptor. Discussion with experts were done to arrange the module book, participant’s hand book, and flipchart.

The second part was intensive counseling training of long term family planning and also competency assessment of health workers.

The third part was health workers doing intensive counseling to prospective acceptor and doing a scoring on their interest to use the family planning method. This is to find out whether or not the module can increase health worker’s knowledge, attitude and behavior toward family planning counseling. And comparing it to other health workers who got trained with other module.

This study shows that a two days intensive counseling module focusing on communication skills, counseling, stimulation, and workshop can help increase health worker’s knowledge and competency about counseling. Intensive counseling competency of health workers can increase prospective acceptor’s interest in using the product. Statistically, the prospective acceptor’s interest of using the product is higher in women who got intensive counseling compared to women who got other counseling.

This result was presented by dr. Arietta R.D Pusponegoro, SpOG(K) on her doctoral hearing, on Wednesday, July 3rd 2019 in Auditorium IMERI. The dissertation was titled “The Impact of Intensive Counseling Training of Health Workers on Prospective Acceptor’s Interest to Long Term Family Planning Method”.
