FMUI Team’s Achievements in IMPhO 2019

FMUI student’s delegates successfully make the alma mater proud after receiving an award in the Indonesia Medical Physiology Olympiad (IMPhO) 2019. The delegates consist of Dana Zakiyyah Rifai (3rd year FMUI students), Daniell Edward Raharjo (2nd year FMUI students), and Salman Azis Nizami (3rd year FMUI students) who are the first winners of IMPhO 2019, also Gifta Hati Gemar Zebua (3rd year FMUI students) and Johan Cahyadirga (3rd year FMUI students) who are the second winners on the competition.

IMPhO is the first and only physiology olympic for Indonesian medical students all over the country, held by Faculty of Medicine Airlangga University, Surabaya. This year, IMPhO was held on April 13rd to 14th and 49 teams from all around the country participated.

This year’s theme is “Boost Your Spirit as Medical Student with Physiology”. The event invites medical students to explore physiology as a fundamental knowledge in medicine.

FMUI’s delegates journey to the final round is not an easy route. The had to go through 5 stages. The first stage is elimination round, where the delegates were given 100 written true or false questions, if they answered correctly they were given +1 score, if the answered incorrectly they were given -1, and 0 if they didn’t answer. The questions were answered individually, and the score was accumulated per group.

From the elimination round, 20 teams with the highest score move on the oral quiz round, where they were divided into 4 sessions, in every session 5 groups competed.

The third round is quarter final, three teams entered this round. The format is similar to oral quiz round. After the quarter final FMUI delegates continued to the final round and successfully won first and second place. The delegates also received individual award as Ten Bes Written Test Score, those delegates are Dana Zakiyyah Rifai (1st place), Gerry Kurniawan (2nd place), Daniell Edward Raharjo (3rd place), Johan Cahyadirga (7th place), and Gifta Hati Gemar Zebua (9th place).

These achievements is because of their hard works, and training before the competition. They also thank all teachers from Department of Physiology FMUI, especially Mr. Gulshan Fahmi El Bayani, S.Gz, M.Biomed.

Dana Zakiyyah Rifai, or Saski, shares a tip to other students interested in competing in similar competition. Hard work, determination, and prayers are the keys to success. “Since the first time we became FMUI representatives in IMPhO, we give our best effort to study physiology. Even though we got tired sometimes, we won’t give up. Our hard works are also accompanied by a lot of prayers. Alhamdulillah we successfully won gold and silver medals” Saski said.

Congratulations to the winning teams. Hopefully this experience can motivate other students to make more achievements. Go FMUI!
