FMUI students achieve an award in International Scientific Competition

Again, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia (FMUI) students achieve an award in International science competition. Kristian Kurniawan (FMUI 2015), Fabiola Cathleen (FMUI 2016), Marco Raditya (FMUI 2016), and Daniel Edward Rahardjo (FMUI 2017) receive 2nd place for Scientific Paper in East Asian Medical Students’ Conference (EAMSC) 2019 in Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand on 8-13 January 2019

EAMSC is an international medical student conference which is held by Asian medical Student’s Association (AMSA). Every year, this event will bring up a popular health concern which will then analyzed and discussed comprehensively, to encourage medical students’ participation in global health issue.

This year’s theme is “Diabetes and Obesity: The Unrecognized Burden”. This issue has been brought, based on epidemiological data which stated that 80% diabetic patients comes from middle to low income, and most of them are from South East Asian. Moreover, the most common cause of diabetes and obesity is due to unhealthy life style. This issue has become national burden since the cost of treatment for the disease is quite high.

Before coming to Bangkok as an Indonesian’ delegate in EAMSC 2019, Kristian and friends has been selected in national level by AMSA Indonesia. From all of scientific paper made by medical students all over Indonesia, their paper has been chosen to represent Indonesia for EAMSC 2019. Every nation which participate in EAMSC 2019 should send one paper only for the competition, with the same national selection mechanism. Kristian and friends become the representation of Indonesia in EAMSC 2019 with other 300 medical students from 20 Asian countries.

In EAMSC 2019, Kristian and friends created a paper about “Childhood Obesity as a Predictor of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 in Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”. The research made based on the fact that Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus has been known as the silent killer and this issue has been growing world widely.

Globally, Type 2 DM has become 1 of the 10 cause of death. According to WHO, there are about 422 million people suffer from diabetes type 2. This number has been doubled from 1980. This non-communicable disease is because of insulin resistance, thus increase the blood glucose and resulting in many health complications.

“Reffered to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) about a reduction of premature mortality rate which is 1/3 from total in 2030, we decided to create a meta-analysis. This meta-analysis searched one of the risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adult, which is obesity during childhood period.” said Kristian Kurniawan to Public Relation FMUI

From this research, they found that children with obesity have a higher risk on developing diabetes mellitus type 2 when they becoming adult. This phenomenon is related with the early rise of adipocyte cells and insulin resistance in person with the history of obesity during childhood.

“To start this research, we made the meta-analysis design based on PRISMA Statement. Then, we collected literatures form PubMed, Scopus, Plos, Cochrane, Science Direct, Clinical Key, ProQuest, dan Wiley. After selecting the studies based on eligibility criteria, the data were extracted and reviewed based on quality and risk of bias. Finally, we analyzed all the data according to the methods and principles.” Said Kristian

This research shows a significant effect on a high risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus development in children with obesity. Therefore, implementing a healthy lifestyle accoding to Ministry of Health via Gerakan Masyarakat Hidup Sehat (GERMAS) / Healthy life style movement for the society program is very recommended. As people are used to with healthy life style since the early age, we might reach SDG 2030 optimally.

“Me and my friends hope that this research and achievement from us, could be beneficial for the society to increase the awareness that obesity in children should be prevented.” Kristian said represent his friends

Meanwhile, when contacted separately with PR FMUI, Marco Raditya, the leader of the AMSA-UI delegates for EAMSC 2019, expressed his pleasure and gratitude for the opportunity to represent Indonesia in International scientific event.

“We are so glad and happy because we could make our parents, university and our nation proud of us. We initially did not expect to be in 2nd place in this international event. But thankfully, after a hard work there always be a great result! So, we are waiting for other student in FMUI to participate in other international event,” closed Marco Raditya.
