Benefit of Futsal for Teenager’s Mental and Physical Health

Juvenile delinquencies such as fighting, motorcycle gang, and drug abuse are still big problems in Indonesia. Those conditions indicate that teenagers are susceptible to mental health problems, irregular lifestyles, and poor stress management.

Physical activity and sports can be a place for teenagers to express their interest, and protect them from negative influences. However usually teenagers don’t do physical activity regularly, and schools PE subject is usually very little in duration.

These days, teenagers like to do futsal in their spare time. When playing futsal, almost all body parts is moved, and it can increase hearts endurance, lung capacity, muscle power, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition, and mental health. Not only beneficial for health, futsal is also useful to increase cognitive function (memory and attention). Futsal can prevent physical stress and oxidative stress.

Juvenile criminal phenomenon happening in Indonesia had become special attention for Jajat Darajat Kusumah Negara, S.Pd, M.Kes, AIFO, a researcher from Biomedical Science Doctoral Program. Through his research, Jajat focuses on how to prevent juvenile delinquencies with positive activity such as sport. From observation, futsal is very loved among teenagers, because it can be done anywhere, anytime, and by anyone. However, this activity is usually not a regular exercise and not continuous, therefore visible impact does not happen.

Jajat did a research aimed to analyze relation between frequency of futsal once a week (FO1), three times a week (FO3) and five times a week (FO5) to physical health, neuroplasticity through attention, memory, and brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) and insulin like growth factor (IGF-1), physical stress through cortisol response, and oxidative stress through malondialdehyde (MDA).

The result of this study is optimal futsal frequency in kids and teenagers is three times a week. This means that if futsal isn’t done at optimal frequency, the benefit won’t be seen. On the other hand, if the frequency is more than 3 times a week, it can causes physical and oxidative stress, that risks metabolic disturbances.

Jajat Darajat Kusumah Negara, S.Pd, M.kes, AIFO presented the result on his doctoral hearing, Wednesday July 10th 2019, on Auditorium IMERI.

The dissertation is titled “The Effect of Futsal Frequency in Physical Health, Neuroplasticity, Physical Stress, and Oxidative Stress on Teenagers (A Study on Physical Health, Attention, Memory, BDNF, IGF-1, Cortisol, and MDA Level)”. The head examiner was dr. Nurhadi Ibrahim, PhD, and other examiners include Dr. dr. Ani Retno Prijanti, MS; Dr. dr. Hartono Gunardi, SpA(K); and Prof. Dr. dr. Ambrosius Purba, M.Sc, AIFO from Padjajaran University.

Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, SpPD-KGEH, MMB as the hearing chairman inaugurated Jajat Darajat Kusumah Negara, S.Pd, M.Kes, AIFO as a Doctor in Biomedical Science FMUI.
