Another 2 Professors from Faculty of Medicine has been Inaugurated

Saturday (22/12/2018) at 10 AM, UI inaugurated 2 Professors from Faculty of medicine in IMERI FMUI Balroom, UI Salemba Campus. The Rector of UI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Anis, M.Met led the ceremony which inaugurates Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Dra. Asmarinah, M.Si from Biology Department FMUI and  Prof. Dr. dr. Ismail, SpOT(K) from Orthopedic and Traumatology Department FMUI

At that time, Prof. Asmarinah delivered her inauguration speech with the title “Direction of Future Medical Development: From Nitrogen Bases in Genes to Hospital Services (From Base Pairs to the Bedside)”. Meanwhile, Prof. Ismail delivered his inauguration speech with the title “A Breakthrough and Independence on Reparations, Restoration, Regeneration, Reconstruction, and Replacement of Bones, Joints and Knee in Indonesia.”

At her speech, Prof. Asmarinah explained about the utilization of genetics and epigenetics is very important for treating diseases. “In the near future, diseases management and treatment will be based on genetics and epigenetics profile. Therefore, personalized medicine or precision medicine should become our attention for us who works in medicine and health industry.” She said

Since a half century, the increase in basic knowledge related to the mechanism of disease occurrence has been progressed rapidly. Rapid and in-depth biomedical research to find out the mechanism of disease emergence has lately stimulated the development of methods and technology for diagnostic, therapeutic, prevention of diseases.

One of the basic knowledge about patogenesis of diseases is genetics. Genetics is a study about characteristic and behavior of living things based on hereditary materials. This hereditary material is gen, which is nucleic acid molecules in form of DNA (Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid), and will be translated into protein.

Other than genetics, epigenetic is also important for development of diseases. Epigenetics is a study about changes in individual character which is caused by nucleic acid molecules modification and histone protein, rather than genetic mutation. These changes may result in differences in protein number produced. These modifications may cause by environment factors, such as chemical exposure from food.

On the same occasion, Prof. Ismail explained his breakthroughs related to total and comprehensive services through basic, translational, clinical, innovation and medical services via mechanical and biological approaches for complex fractures and degenerative diseases treatment. The comprehensive management referred to the preservation effort, such as reparation, restoration, regeneration and reconstruction, as well as replacement.

“A Breakthrough on fixation mechanical approaches or bone stabilization which have been developed in the form of methods and equipment to improve efficiency and independence for the management of fractures and degenerative diseases, such as: pelvic fixation C-clamp UI-CM modifications system, peri-articular external fixation, spinal compactors, and spinal distractors have patented under my name.”he explained in his speech. “Meanwhile, the biological approach is carried out with mesenchymal stem cell (SPM) implantation combined with a tissue engineering approach based on the principles of Best Clinical Practice in Stem Cells Application,” he continued.

With this method, it is hoped that Indonesian population will be free from pain, freely moved, have no bone defect and functional knee to support the increase of productive living

Based on Constitutions No.14 in 2015 regarding Teacher and Lecturers, Professor is the highest functional position for lecturers who are still teaching in the higher education unit.

It has always been a pride for Universitas Indonesia, when its academic community loved their almamater and made many achievements. With the increase in the title of Professor, it is hoped that it can spur the spirit in other UI academics to be excel and be able to raise UI’s big name in the national and international arena.
