Biochemistry is a discipline that learns about role of various molecules in the chemical reactions that happen inside the organism. The scope of biochemistry is very wide as the life itself. Biochemistry learns all aspects in organism starting from the simple to the complex reactions.
In order to understand about basic concepts in the organism, Biochemistry Introduction Modules are given in four main subjects including:
Protein is the most abundant macromolecule in organism and has many key roles. The most important protein is enzyme which is the biocatalisator inside the cell. In addition, protein functions as transportation media (hemoglobin), body defense mechanism (antibody), hormone, etc.
DNA & GENETIC EXPRESSION
DNA contains genetic information that later are copied and translated to produce amino acid which is the building blocks of protein. In addition, recombinant DNA, genetic manipulation and human genome project were discussed.
MEMBRANE AND CELLS COMMUNICATION
Cell in the organism is packaged with membrane that make the content of cell is not mixed up with the extracellular components. Although it is bordered by the cell membrane, there is still interaction between the cells because of the cell communication that facilitated by various chemical messengers and their receptors on the membrane.
ENERGY TRANSDUCTION & METABOLISM
Metabolism is a field that discusses about the formation of energy (ATP) in the bioenergetics. It also discusses about how the macromolecules obtained from food supply can be processed to be micromolecule that can be utilized by the body to produce energy. In addition, macromolecule is also formed from its precursor in the body with the help of various enzymes. Moreover, it also discusses about non-nutrient metabolism such as nucleotide, prophyrin and xenobiotic.
The understanding about biochemistry is beneficial for student to understand various phenomenons in learning about the disease and fast-growing medicine.
